In the heart of hipster Williamsburg on North Sixth Street, the bars are packed with patrons and chain clothing stores like American apparel are sprouting up everywhere. So why not combine the two? That’s what the owners of Urban Outfitters thought. They’ve applied for a liquor license here for their future Williamsburg store.

City Councilman Stephen Levin sees it as a quality-of-life issue. Levin said, “I can’t think of a circumstance for which it would be appropriate for Urban Outfitters to have a liquor license. We must ask ourselves do we really want people drunk when they are buying their skinny jeans and ironic T-shirts?”

Urban Outfitters has already had its share of controversy. Remember the Holocaust evoking Jewish star T-shirt which the Anti-defamation League called “extremely distasteful and offensive?” Or the Obama black T-shirt that Urban Outfitters said was meant to be blue and an eat-less T-shirt with a super skinny brunette. Then there was the ghettopoly tee shirt or the underage booze shirt for kids.
