‘Atheist’ vanity plate deemed ‘objectionable’ by NJ Motor Vehicle Commission

(PIX11) – If you have driven around the city, chances are you have seen those “vanity” plates.

Some can be pretty funny, others just downright offensive.

David Silverman, who happens to be president of the American Atheists, requested a license tag ┬áthat was a variation of the word “atheist” with the letter “I” replaced with the number “1.”

So it came as a surprise when his request was deemed objectionable by the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission.

He appealed and later prevailed.
