NEWARK (PIX11) — This is the second time Christine Davin has lived through a fire. She credits her roommate with saving her life in the Newark blaze Monday afternoon.

“Yeah if my roommate wasn’t home I definitely would have lost my life. I didn’t hear anything,” said Davin.

The fire broke out around 12:30 p.m. at  215 Garside St,, and quickly moved to three alarms. The flames were fierce, and the smoke so intense, that several firefighters had to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Dozens of Newark residents came out to see the flames, and to comfort their neighbors. Some don’t know where they’ll be sleeping.

The hero roommate that rescued Davin  said he wouldn’t have done it any other way.

Like her neighbors, Davin is devastated, but staring at her home she knows it could have been far worse.

The cause is under investigation. The Red Cross is assisting displaced residents.
