FLATBUSH, BROOKLYN (PIX11) – Police have arrested and charged a man in connection to the shooting of a toddler in Brooklyn Saturday morning.

Akeem Bernard has been charged with felony assault, criminal possession of a weapon, endangering the welfare of a child and tampering with evidence.

The child, three-year-old Tharell Edward, was shot in the head while he slept in his crib inside his East 21st Street apartment in Flatbush.

Shots rang out at about 3:30 a.m. while Thraell was home with his mother’s roommate and the suspect. The little boy’s mother, Nichelle Edward, was not home at the time of the shooting.

“I did not shoot anybody,” Bernard said as he was led out of the 70th precinct Sunday morning.

It remains unclear if the shooting started outside or inside the apartment.

According to neighbors, little Tharell was still recovering from being mauled by a dog a few months ago. “He’s a sweet little boy. He’s three, but he looks like he’s a year old. He’s a beautiful kid. He didn’t deserve for something like this to happen to him,” neighbor Tamara Dennis told PIX11.

Tharell remains in critical but stable condition at King’s County Medical Center.
