ASTORIA, Queens (PIX11) – A black truck hit and injured a police officer before speeding off, launching a manhunt in Queens that snarled traffic on the Queensboro Bridge.
Police pulled over the F150 pickup truck with Florida plates around 9 p.m. at Crescent St. and Broadway in Astoria after connecting the plates to a robbery, according to police. During the traffic stop the driver suddenly accelerated, striking the officer as he fled the scene.
The officer fired at the truck, but it is unclear if anyone was hit. The truck was later found abandoned at 37th Ave. and 24th St., but the driver is still at large. Police shutdown the Queensboro Bridge in both directions to search for suspect — described as a white male in his 50s, 6’0″ to 6’2″, wearing glasses and a brown shirt. Major delays should be expected in both directions. It is less than a week since a major truck fire caused the bridge’s closure and snarled traffic for most of the day.
The extent of the cop’s injuries is not known at this time, he was transported to Cornell Medical Center in Manhattan.
The investigation is ongoing.
