(PIX11) — It’s a special day for the Intrepid; it turns 70 years old on Friday.

Back on August 16th, 1943, the ship was commissioned and sent into service during World War II, its crew fought against the Japanese.

Now thousands come visit the Intrepid Sea, Air & space Museum every year, and the Space Shuttle Enterprise even calls it home.

Some of the original sailors were also on hand Friday  to ring the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange.
