STATEN ISLAND (PIX11) – It had the makings of a movie. Illegal guns, drugs trafficked in from Mexico and a horrible murder plot. It didn’t happen on a movie set though, it happened on Staten Island, officials announced Tuesday.
“Six of defendants are accused under these indictments of transporting guns from out of state to kill another man as part of a murder conspiracy. Three attempts were made on the victim’s life and two hit men were hired as part of that conspiracy,” said Richmond County District Attorney Daniel M. Donovan.
In the end, 39 people were arrested for crimes including transporting illegal firearms, distributing and selling cocaine, burglarizing homes on Staten Island, conspiring to commit murder, and attempted murder.
“This is real life, with the lives of Staten Islanders being put into danger,” said Richmond County District Attorney Daniel M. Donovan.
The weapons activity, the drug dealing and the gang activity all happened in neighborhoods filled with families and children. Drugs were allegedly sold in Heartland Village, West Brighton and Great Kills.
“Some of these guns were about to be used to shoot other individuals. Three of these guns were recovered in a car chase in Newark, New Jersey,” said Richmond County District Attorney Daniel M. Donovan.
Authorities said hope this big bust sends a big message. Authorities said more of the defendants were responsible for most of the drug activity and violence on the island, now they are off the streets.
