Woman falls to her death from 17th-floor balcony after railing gives way

A woman smoking on the balcony of her 17th-floor apartment plunged to her death early Thursday in what police are calling an accident.

Authorities are investigating whether the railing gave way at the apartment building at 400 E. 57th St.

Jennifer Rosoff, 35, was on the balcony about 1 a.m. when she fell and landed on construction scaffolding.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Buildings Department issued a vacate order for all balconies in the building as it investigates the accident.

Sarah Shubert, a resident of the apartment building, said she heard a dull big thud at the time.
“Last thing I would ever imagine,” she said.
