MTA may shelve no-swipe metrocard idea for new cellphone technology

(PIX11) – We were supposed to get “no swipe” metro cards last year.

But obviously that didn’t happen.

Now mayoral candidate and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn wants the MTA to speed up the process.

But don’t hold your breath.

The MTA initially wanted to use microchips embedded in credit cards to pay your fare as you hit the turnstile.

Now — the agency wants to wait and see if newer technology, like using your cell phone, may be a better option.
