(PIX11) – Emergency crews are responding to partial building collapse in Chinatown Thursday.

The incident happened early this afternoon at 17 Pike Street. Reports indicate there was an explosion and the windows of the building were blown out.

The FDNY says three people have serious injuries; five others have non life threatening injuries.

Investigators believe the collapse was caused by a gas explosion.

“The floor rumbled, glass shattered at the same time. That’s how bad it was,” one eyewitness on the scene said. The eyewitness added that there was “thick black smoke.”
