LONG ISLAND (PIX11) – Beach goers got a surprise Wednesday afternoon when a large shark appeared in the water close to Long Beach.
The 10-foot-long animal, shown in photos taken by a lifeguard, was identified as a basking shark. Not the vicious killer it might appear to be, basking sharks subsist on krill — the same tiny shrimp-like crustaceans eaten by whales.
It washed up into the shallow waters near Pennsylvania Ave. It’s still unclear why the shark died.
