NEW YORK (PIX11) – For more than a month now, there is an ongoing quest to get to the bottom of the truth behind NYC’s new 911 system.
Is there something wrong with the city’s ICAD emergency operating system, as EMS dispatchers and their union officials have been alleging?
And if so, what role did it play in the fatal event at the very core of all of this, the June 4th death of 4-year-old Ariel Russo and what became a four minute delay in EMS response time to help her.
While the FDNY insisted from the very beginning that human error was to blame on the day of Russo’s death, they have launched their own internal investigation and at Mayor Bloomberg’s insistence on June 22 the city’s Department of Investigation began reviewing that process, while also conducting its own independent investigation.
It is that investigation on top of an investigation the Russo family attorney, Sanford Rubenstein, says he just doesn’t trust.
“A truly independent investigation requires fresh interviews from day one. Not review interviews already conducted by the fire department,” said Rubenstein.
However, disturbing numbers released by the Deputy Mayor reveal while these two investigations are underway, issues with the new system seem to persist.
From June 27th to just this past Sunday, more than 4100 calls to 911 came with missing information or duplicate numbers and addresses.
Also, that there has been a significant spike in what dispatchers call PD LOST, calls received with only partial information.
While the Deputy Mayor insists to the city’s knowledge that has not impacted accuracy in response times and locations, it is a fact not resting easy with the family who has a 40-million dollar lawsuit pending against the city.
