Joey Chestnut makes history at Nathan’s 4th of July hot dog eating competition

CONEY ISLAND (PIX11) — The idea of eating 6-dozen servings of hot dogs would probably sound horrifying to anyone but it was just another day for professional eater Joey “Jaws” Chestnut.

Chestnut was the eater to beat at the men’s competition in the annual Nathan’s Famous 4th of July hot dog eating competition on Coney Island.

Nearly 40,000 spectators were on hand Thursday to see Chestnut clobbered the competition — and history as he broke his own world record, consuming 69 hot dogs in 10 minutes. The win helped him snag his 7th consecutive contest win.

Meanwhile in the ladies competition, Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas took the crown in a thrilling win that happened down to the buzzer. Thomas managed to chow down on 36 and three-quarters dogs which was barely ahead of the closest competitor, Juliet Lee, who at 36.

“It doesn’t get old,” Chestnut told PIX News, shortly after winning. “I can’t wait till next year because it’s the best time of year for me.”

To put it in perspective, according its nutrition facts, a Nathan’s hot dog contains 290 calories. The man of the hour – Joey Chestnut – took down 69, which comes to about 20,000 calories which is what a person on a 2,000 calorie-a-day diet consumes in 10 days!
