(PIX11) — It was announced Friday that the city’s medical examiner has identified remains found at Ground Zero as those of FDNY lieutenant Jeffrey Walz.
Walz,37, was with Ladder 9 and entered the north tower shortly after the attack. Walz and several of his colleagues did not escape before the tower collapsed.
According to the Staten Island Advance, Walz had a successful engineering career but decided to follow in the footsteps of his father and become a firefighter. He left behind a wife and toddler son when he was killed on 9/11.
The paper also said that Walz would often ride his bike to work in the East Village, all the way from his home in Tuckahoe in Westchester County.
The medical examiner’s office has been testing remains from the attacks since May 2002 and have identified 1,637 people.
