SEE IT: 28 injured after fireworks shoot into California crowd

SIMI VALLEY, CA (PIX11) – A malfunction sent fireworks rocketing into the crowd at a California 4th of July pyrotechnics show, injuring 28 people.

Eight of those people were treated at the scene in Simi Valley, CA, and 20 others were taken to area hospitals.  What started as a festive Independence Day celebration for roughly 10,000 people turned terrifying as some of the fireworks shot directly into the crowd, leaving four people with severe shrapnel and burn injuries.

“Obviously what happened is, we had a severe malfunction in one of these devices,” Mike Lindberry, a spokesman for the Ventura County Fire Department, told KTLA. “We want to find out why it happened — was it equipment, was it faulty, was it loaded improperly.”
