The first ferry left Battery Park at 8:30 a.m. Thursday. It was filled with people excited to visit the iconic statue on our nation’s Independence Day.
Liberty Island was closed following Superstorm Sandy. And while the statue was not damaged, the island had major flooding and infrastructure damage.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg and other elected officials were scheduled to officially reopen Liberty Island Thursday morning.
It’s estimated the damage on Liberty Island and Ellis Island combined, cost $59 million.
Ellis Island remains closed and still needs repairs.
