Jersey City’s Fire Department is adding new recruits this summer. And for the first time in the department’s history, two minority women will become firefighters this August.

According to the Jersey Journal, the Jersey City Fire Department is adding 21 new recruits in total. Vanessa Gross, 29, is one of the new women. Her mother spoke to PIX11 Saturday night.

“There is a lot on her shoulders, so she has to prove herself,” said proud mom Nydia Sanchez-Davila.  Three women are currently working in the department, according to the Jersey Journal. One is a captain.

Gross is a veteran. She fought in the Iraq war. After working a few different jobs in law enforcement, Sanchez-Davila said the Jersey City Fire Department looks like the final stop for her daughter. “I guess she was looking for a home and I think she’s found it”
