QUEENS (PIX11) — An off-duty police officer is recovering Monday morning after he was shot in Queens.

According to reports, the officer was shot in the hand when he tried to stop a man from beating up a woman in the Jamaica section late Sunday.

Officer Joseph Koch was leaving a party in the neighborhood when he saw a little boy run out of a house, screaming for help.

Officials say Jose Bernazard, who is the woman’s ex-boyfriend, attacked Officer Joseph Koch when he walked into the home.

During the struggle, the officer’s gun went off – firing three shots.

One bullet hit Koch in the hand while a second bullet struck Bernazard in the stomach. Both men are listed in stable condition.
