NEW JERSEY (PIX11)– A Leonia teenager has been arrested and charged with sexual assault by sexual contact, according to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s office.

Darius Levine, 18, is accused of inappropriate sexual activity with a 3-year-old boy inside the Leonia Fire Department’s building.

Levine’s parents told PIX11 News their son is developmentally disabled and probably does not understand what happened. But the teen’s mother said, “We have to believe it to be true, because of the people involved, because they are trustworthy people and there was no reason for them to say otherwise.”

Levine’s mother Christine Banas said on Sunday her son was awaiting a psych evaluation at the Bergen County jail.

According to Banas and her husband David Levine, the teenager has spent a lot of his time volunteering inside the Leonia fire house. He was even made an honorary member there.

The prosecutor’s office said Sunday that late last week Darius Levine allegedly was inappropriate with the child inside and the young boy told his father.

Levine’s parents said they reached out to the child’s family. “We want them to know how sorry we are about what happened,” said Banas. “We are devastated.”

The Leonia Fire Department’s building was closed to the public following the alleged incident. Only active duty firefighters responding to an emergency are allowed inside.
