Manhattan Beach, BROOKLYN (PIX11) – In the midst of a spring heat wave, Senator Chuck Schumer called on the Food and Drug Administration to fast-track the approval process for more-effective sunscreens.

Schumer said the U.S. is behind many European countries in approving sunscreens containing long-range UVA filters, which protect from a broader range of the sun’s rays.

He also asked the FDA to publish findings on whether sunscreens with an SPF of above 50 offer any better protection. Schumer says that’s something the administration has been studying for a decade, but never issued a statement on, adding consumers deserve to know which sunscreens offer the best protection.
