American Airlines is rewarding passengers who don’t travel with carry-on bags.

Starting Thursday, people carrying just a personal item that fits under the seat — with no rolling suitcases — can board before most other passengers.

It’s an effort to speed up the boarding process and improve the airline’s on time performance.

Airlines have seen a big back up at the gate since they started charging fees for checked luggage.
