NEW YORK (PIX11) — As hard as it is to believe, Columbia University – one of the oldest Ivy league universities in the country – still offers a whites-only scholarship. Talk about old school.

The controversial fellowship which was launched in 1920 and is still in existence nearly 100 years later, may soon be no more.

The university is now in process of making changes to the Lydia C. Roberts Graduate and Traveling fellowship which favors students who fall in the categories of being from Iowa and “Caucasian,” citing that the restriction is out-of-date and just plain illegal.

Graduates from Columbia University cheer during the university’s commencement ceremony in New York, last year.

Columbia filed an affidavit with Manhattan’s supreme court this week to modify the required conditions.

Some say the whites-only scholarship clearly violates the U.S. Constitution and that is something Columbia isn’t taking it lightly.

Other requirements on the fellowship reportedly include that the student “must not study law or several other fields, and must return to Iowa for two years after graduating.”

I hope that ALL scholarships that are awarded based on ethnicity, race, religion, gender, and sexual orientation are abolished. Frankly, the two primary criteria for scholarships should be financial need and academic performance.
