NEW YORK (PIX11)– Security was tight Sunday for two marathons and a bike tour.

Security checks, an increased police presence and bag restrictions were in effect at the Long Island Marathon, the New Jersey Marathon and New York City’s Five Boro Bike Tour.

“We don’t succumb to the bad guys. What happened in Boston happened,” said New York Senator Charles Schumer on Long Island. ” A lot of security here but everybody was running it and nobody backed out.”

Race organizers and law enforcement did not take any chances following the bombing at the Boston Marathon last month and they increased security. Participants and spectators said the hassle was worth it.

“What happened at Boston was a horrible thing. Hopefully next year things will be different, but I want to be safe,” said runner Mary Jo DiPaoli.

And the Boston victims were in people’s thoughts Sunday. Many bikers wore an “I Ride For Boston” sticker for the 40 mile tour of New York City.
