Woodstock singer Richie Havens dies at 72

richiehavenFolk singer Richie Havens, who opened the Woodstock Festival and became an icon of an era, has died of a heart attack at age 72, Bloomberg News reported.

Haven passed away at his Jersey City home, Bloomberg reported, quoting Tim Drake, president of The Roots Agency, Haven’s booking agency.

“I really sing songs that move me,” he told The Denver Post, the AP reported. “I’m not in show business; I’m in the communications business. That’s what it’s about for me.”

Havens was the first musician to perform at the festival in August 1969.
