A Newark man has been arrested for allegedly robbing former Newark mayor Sharpe James.

20-year old Alhafeez Williams was picked up by police at a path station in New York early this morning.

Williams is accused of attacking the 77-year old James from behind on Bergen Street yesterday.

Cops say he grabbed James in a choke hold, yanked off a gold chain, and then took off.

He later contacted police saying he was prepared to surrender.

James was not hurt during the incident.
