SOUTH AFRICA (PIX11)- Nelson Mandela has been discharged from the hospital.

The former South African President was released Saturday following a bout with pneumonia and a reoccurring lung infection.

Doctors have drained the fluid from his lungs so he can breathe without difficulty.

The 94-year-old is set to return home, where he’ll continue to receive home based care.

South Africans have been closely following the anti-apartheid leader’s progress since he was admitted late last month.

Authorities say doctors had to be extremely careful during each treatment and procedure because of Mandela’s old age.

Mandela was admitted into a different hospital last December to have his gallstones removed.
