UPPER WEST SIDE (PIX11)- Police say a man was struck and killed by a subway train on the Upper West Side early Saturday morning.

According to authorities 58-year-old John Williams jumped down onto the tracks.

Officials are not sure why he went down there, but they believe that he was trying to retrieve something he dropped.

The victim was struck by a D train at the 72nd Street station around 6:45 a.m.

He was rushed to Saint Luke’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
