PHILIPPINES (PIX11)-  In the Philippines eighteen men had themselves nailed to crosses to re-enact Christ’s crucifixion.

They literally had nails put through their hands and onto the cross.

The celebration took place in the city of San Fernando.

Two of the participants had to be taken down and receive medical attention.

It has become a yearly tradition although the Catholic Church discourages the practice.

The devotees believe it is the best way to be forgiven for their sins.

Thousands were there to watch while two hundred cops were on hand to ensure everyone’s safety.

Critics say this isn’t really what God would want.
