NEW YORK (PIX11)- Senator Chuck Schumer is begging federal regulators to step in to prevent what he says could be an explosion of prescription drug abuse.

Addressing a crowd in Manhattan on Sunday; Senator Schumer said when a patent on Oxycodone runs out next week, other companies will be able to begin producing generic versions.

Currently, the FDA does not require those cheaper versions to use anti-abuse technology and he’s asking regulators to force the same requirements on generic drug makers.

Schumer also says the move could put pharmacies at risk, saying generic versions have a high street value and are more likely to be stolen.
