(THE MORNING CALL) — The son will never know, but he believes his 86-year-old father, Elwood “Woody” Osman, could no longer face the suffering his wife, Mildred, endured.

Thomas Osman said his 83-year-old mother suffered from macular degeneration, spinal stenosis and complications from a recent stroke. He described her as blind, mostly paralyzed and in terrible pain.

His father went to her fourth-floor hospice room Tuesday afternoon at the Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown and shot and killed her, then himself, authorities said.
