In response to the debate in New York City about restricting the size of sugary drinks and Mayor Bloomberg’s effort to limit how much is consumed, the Mississippi legislature passed and the governor signed a new law outlawing mandatory portion sizes and regulation of food. The law also prohibits local governments from requiring that a calorie count be displayed on menus.

Mississippi Ban

Mississippi has the highest rates of obesity in the nation. Its Governor says the new law protects far-reaching government intrusion. He will continue to support healthy eating initiatives and exercise.

Bloomberg reportedly called the new law “ridiculous.”
