Death threats, reporters’ families targeted over controversial gun-owner map

When the Journal News published a map that details the names and addresses of pistol permit holders in Westchester and Rockland counties, the paper’s editors say, they expected some criticism — but not death threats.

According to the New York Times, “Information [has been posted online] about where their children attended school; some reporters have received notes saying they would be shot on the way to their cars; bloggers have encouraged people to steal credit card information of Journal News employees; and two packages containing white powder have been sent to the newsroom and a third to a reporter’s home.”

The powder proved to be harmless, and, so far, much of the blow-back has been happening online.  In New Rochelle, the Talk of the Sound blogger Bob Cox attempted to turn the tables by creating his own map that pinpoints the homes of Journal News employees.

This map posted online claims to show the addresses of Journal News employees. The map is in response to the paper’s controversial decision to publish a map showing the addresses of gun owners.

“I don’t think my map is particularly fair to the Journal News employees, many of them have nothing to do with the story, but that’s in the same spirit of the Journal News map which is equally unfair,” Cox told PIX 11 News over the phone from Florida.

Still, Cox said, he did not think the story would take a threatening turn.

“I certainly don’t endorse the types of things I’m reading in the New York Times, about the threats, anthrax scares, getting people’s children involved, I just wanted to address the appropriate response and I thought my map was that response,” said Cox, who insists he will not take the interactive map down from his site.

State Senator Greg Ball, who represents Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties, is not sympathetic to the recent security concerns of newspaper employees who have hired an armed guard stationed at their building.  He has been vocal about the Journal News’ decision to publish the original gun owner map.

The Journal News created this controversial map in the wake of the Newtown shooting. It shows the addresses of registered gun owners and was widely criticized by gun rights advocates

In a statement to PIX 11 News, he said, “When asked to take the site down, they [Journal News] told all of these good, law-abiding people to ‘eat cake’.  Well, now these same editors are getting a taste of that poisonous cake.”

At the Journal News headquarters in White Plains, armed guards will continue to protect the offices indefinitely.

It's like a stupid high school newspaper prank gone awry, and the kids got in over their heads. Amateur hour.
The shoe is on the other foot. Perhaps these clowns will learn to respect the privacy of law abiding citizens.

"Newspaper that ran gun-owner map hires armed guard"

So the media decided it was best to protect themselves with that which they would ban for others. So for now the media answer for protection is more guns? LOL

  • Thane36425

They shouldn't be threatened. That only plays in their favor. Instead they should be sued by every gun owner who's house is burglarized. For that matter, non-gun owners could also sue claiming the map made them a target as well. The suits will probably be rejected by the liberal judges but even so, the attempt would be better than making threats.

The GYM where I work out has music on the Cable, and I have recently been listening to Classic Country and Western, and Classic Popular Music from the 50’s while I work out, and have came to the conclusion that much can be learned about our society by comparing the music of the 50’s, to the evil chanting that is now called “music”.

The 50’s music is almost exclusively about love, beauty, patriotism and hope. It does not refer to women as Ho’s, does not advocate killing “pigs”, or the killing of millions of babies in the womb, does not glorify having children out of wedlock, does not use profanity, or any of the other evil filth that comes out of the modern so-called “music”.

It is almost as though the Devil has taken over this country, and when we are in chains because we followed him, he is going to sit back and have a good laugh, and say, “That’s what they get for believing me”.

Imagine how sad God must be with this country, and how sad He was Nov. 6, 2012.

When you take away our right of privacy…WTF did you expect? Collecting names and addresses of legal firearms owners and not having a story of any kind, says volumes about their agenda.

Wanna bet that the threats are coming from trolls, illegals, illegal gun owners…you don’t know who is threatening you…could be your buddies Al Qaeda. Ignorant narrow minded MSMs let the cattle go Mooooooo

  • The Sarge

I don't believe that the threats are coming from the gun owners. I believe that they are phony threats coming from the left to make the point that the gun owners are violent killers. Just like all the phony racial intimidations and threats that the media always makes a big deal out of and then hides when it's revealed that it was a minority who placed the noose in a tree, or racist writing on a wall, or whatever, in an effort to stir up racial division and hatred against white people. These aren't coming from the right.

  • Rick Visor MD

What did they expect.? They identify people's home with guns, put those innocent families at danger for people wanting to steal guns, ? put them at odds with their neighbors who don't have gun's because they are now afraid of their neighbors that do? put the neighbors at risk for burglary/other crime because they have been identified as those that don't (I would not always bet on that) Sell a few papers? Yes, the reporters should be aware that they have stepped into a war zone of their own creation and accept any and all trauma that they recieve as a consequence of said action. The same should be said of any progressive liberal politician or citizen that circumvents our right to protect ourselves. Any and all trauma, including death, if they place my family or me at risk. I am Physician and I have commited myself to saving lives and helping people. I spent 10 plus years of my life serving and protecting the people of this country in the US Army. I will use whatever means necessary to protect my right to protect my family, friends and fellow citizens from you.

But I thought the whole fantasy was fighting off some home invasion with your gun and an original quip like "Make my day, punk!" Here I thought they'd have to pry the gun away from the owner's cold, dead fingers like Chuck Heston said. But it turns out that gun owners need to be protected from other gun enthusiasts trying to take away their guns. Or maybe they need more guns to safeguard the guns they already have. What a bunch of lames! And what's going to happen when they all get Alzheimers and forget the number of that amendment?

    • Rebcraig

Used to live in South Africa, They also legislated our guns away, now people are being murdered in their beds with, hatchets, bricks, knives, bare fists, kitchen knives and guns. If you ask me? I would rather be taken out with a gun that beaten or slaughtered with a brick, hatchet etc. Its the more humane way????? is it not.
Damn all you liberals to hell for changing this world to what it is and to where it is going.
As for publishing my gun owning ass in a newspaper? go ahead, make my day! (as they say in the classics) Except you dont know when I am and when I am not!

    • Roger

Have you heard about the mother in Georgia who defended herself?

Would you have actually done anything to put her in that spot? These maps make people targets, real people not just numbers or addresses.

  • momemome

One thing that no one seems to be saying is that although they published the list of concealed carry permit holders, who I would avoid like the plague since they have to have a certain amount of skill to be issued these permits, there are any number of weapons out there that don't require permits that can do lots of damage without the skill required of a hand gun. Just saying…

  • DJH

I wholly disagree with the death threats and anyone disgusting enough to threaten someone's child – even if only to intimidate, is a coward in my book. Still, turn about is fair play, you reap what you sow and the unethical, integrity challenged, unprofessional intellectual cowards in the media (abc/cnn/cbs/nbc/nyt et al) and especially the journal news have deceived, lied and omitted relevant facts on nearly every topic of importance – add to that, every single one of them is 'reporting' an ideology, THEIR ideology, not the news and they need to be held to account for their treasonous breach of the public trust.
You brought this on, don't even try to play off the pathetic excuse of performing a public service or some cop out about your editorial or journalistic ethics – YOU HAVE NONE. You wanted to shame law abiding American citizens who have dared exercise the rights they have had since 1776 because YOU DISAGREE with them. That's your problem!

I'll be looking forward to hearing about the journal news closing their doors (along with a slew of far left, un-American papers and magazines purporting to be news) and the intellectual cowards are forced to rely on the gov't they propagandized into overreach

  • NotGoin2Takeit

They ensured that crime and violence will occur to at least some fraction of those on the gun owing list.

  • Wild_Bill,nc

With the wide spread use of the Inter-net, Smart phones, and News shows,,,, tangible news papers don't sell like they once did, so in their wisdom, they thought this would boost intrest in their paper…..publicity, whether it's good or bad, is still publicity……No body cared what I had in my house yesterday, so knowing what I have today, is still noones concern…..I also have a chainsaw, cup-cakes and four kittens…..

    • S.R. Potocki

In publishing their article, The Journal News has inadvertantly done a service to two distinctly different groups of people. First, for those who were identified as being armed, enjoy the fact that many criminals now know to avoid your home specifically. Secondly, for the un-armed, now the criminals know who does not have a gun and who does not represent a threat to them when they want to break into your home. The Journal News editors knew better than to do this, someone said it…someone in the office said, “Hey, this is just a bad idea…just because we can do something doesn’t mean we should.” at which point, somehow, an idiot won the arguement, the blow back from this should be by the citizens of New York and hopefully it will take the form of the paper shutting down. On the flip side, those who oppose what the news did, be vocal, write, call…but don’t make threats and act stupid, you only destroy your position and make those at the Journal look like they were justified.

  • deano

now lets see the gun owners show up at these address in mass and PROTEST. time to turn the tables on these lib editors and writers.

  • Bill in Tennessee

Here is my expression of sympathy toward these "journalists"…. HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha…!!! There, that's all the sympathy I can muster for you morons.

  • Tim

Hillareous. I hope the editors go home daily with a slight bit of fear in their minds. And I hope the employees with fear in their minds go find another place to work.

  • caligula

boo hoo. you get what you deserve pu$$y azz journalists. you're messing with peoples' lives. expect them to respond accordingly.

  • CommentGuy7

If a riot ever broke out then all of these liberals, for protection and safety would make a bee-line to the homes of (possibly Republicans – gun owners) Once the riot is over and order is restored, these same liberals would go back to the comfort of their homes and would still be against guns. Liberals, they never learn.

Liberals feel, Conservatives think. This is why liberals are winning. All they have to do is make you feel a certain way, inspite of its irrationality. They will never make you think.

  • Kraven

The hell with all these threats someone needs to actually do something to one or more of them. Then they will take it down. This stuff reminds me of that movie Red Dawn Where the enemy knows who has guns because they take over the government building where the info is stored

  • Don Saar

Post online, broadcast to the pedophiles, sexual predators and gun-wielding criminals, all the Gun Free schools of the Journal News reporters to where these "reporters" send their totally innocent kiddies … just like the totally innocent, but legal, gun owners who've committed absolutely no crimes such as retired NYCity police officers and retired NYCity judges.

Now, that's a Great, Great Idea!!

Next should be all sorts of public information posted online regarding welfare recipients; Social Security recipients when their monthly checks are due in the mail; abortions performed on whom and by whom paid for by the government; all drunk driving DUIs living nearby in the neighborhood; all pedophiles should be known to the wide vast public; all previous sexual rapists of men or women; all stalkers of women under present court order; all non-virgin rape victims; all convicted drug felons but released on parole should be publicly broadcast widely on the internet and radio, television; all bankruptcies and bankrupt persons should be exposed to the neighborhood as a threat to their neighbors property and livelihood; all prior jail sentences of anyone, in fact, should be exposed so as to not allow these criminal elements in our public neighborhoods to be ever again left alone without careful scrutiny and wise neighborhood "judgment".

You know, freedom of the press, freedom of speech, the public's "right to know" without any inhibitions whatsoever regarding so-called 'rights to privacy'.

What's Good for the Goose should also be Good for the Goose!!!!

But the best one still is publishing the Gun Free Schools of the Journal News "reporters" innocent children!!!!!!!!

You know, the ages of the children, when they arrive, when they leave public or private school, how they're transported back and forth, what grade they're in, when school vacations begin and end, and so forth. It's all public information, no? For public safety, no?

Oh, let's also throw in the nearby, local, Gun Free public library(ies) to where these innocent children may go during after school hours FOR THEIR OWN PROTECTION.

If the Domestic Enemy tries to extinguish the 2nd Amendment, or to violate it beyond tolerance, there will be resistance. There will be armed resistance. This is what the Second Amendment is all about; it is about preserving The Constitution against tyranny. No more Infringement. Give me Liberty or give me Death.

Be careful, Liberals, that you don't let the genie of Civil War out of the bottle. For there will be blood. And it will undoubtedly spin out of control. Sadly, we would probably lose much of our constitutional rights in the aftermath of a revolution, but they are taking them now, and destroying my country. At least, maybe we can save something to build back from.

Damn the Democrats. Damn every one.

    • Strider55

The tree of liberty requires frequent watering with the blood of patriots and tyrants." — Thomas Jefferson

It will be our job to make sure that we (the patriots) bleed as little as possible while the streets run red with their (the tyrants') blood.

  • robert

Funny how they do a hit piece on gun owners and when threatened, turn to some one with a gun to protect them. Hipocrites.
