An outspoken Arizona sheriff will send armed posses to protect schools.

Joe Arpaio says his volunteer force has been protecting malls during the holiday shopping season, so sending them to protect students is a logical next step.

The sheriff says he won’t send the posses into the schools, but have them patrol the perimeter of the buildings.

He says he doesn’t plan to consult school officials before sending the armed volunteers their way.

His plan comes after the Arizona state attorney general announced support for arming teachers and principals.
