George H.W. Bush remains in intensive care at a Houston Hospital.

The 88-year-old former president was admitted a month ago for a cough brought on by bronchitis.

His condition has deteriorated. He is in guarded condition.

Doctors say that he is alert and talking to medical staff, and surrounded by family.

They would not discuss his treatment– except to say that he has been put on a liquid diet.
