At first glance, the tall man in the hooded sweatshirt and skullcap seen in this surveillance video appears to be just another resident, or visitor in the lobby of 305 West 13th street in the Village.
At one point he even waved at 85-year old Yvonne Shirwell.
“He looked very at ease, and he was just waiting for his prey,” Shirwell told Pix11.
But that was before he attacked the former dancer, who now walks with a cane.
Shirwell says the suspect appeared to be in his 30s with a medium complexion. He is at least 6 feet tall, 200 lbs.
He forcefully – and brutally pushed his elderly victim down to the ground, inside the building’s elevator.
“I get in the elevator, he follows me in, and he throws me down. And he took my new purse”, said Shirwell.
But as any mugging victim will tell you – purses, wallets, and money can be replaced but it’s the objects of sentimental value that are the most painful to lose.
“And of course, here’s my husband, who’s dying. And he took my Greek wedding ring. And I asked him. I didn’t think he was gonna menace me. So I asked him, I said, ‘please, give me my wedding ring back!’ And he said, ‘no!’”, said Shirwell.
PIX11 reached out the building’s management to address Ms. Shirwell’s security concerns. So far, they have yet to return our call. Meantime, the police are still searching for her attacker.
