Barbara Sheehan is on trial for killing her ex-cop husband Raymond, but just who was the retired NYPD evidence sergeant? When his children testified this week in their mother’s defense, the picture they painted of him was by no means flattering. Comments from other people who knew him fill in a background of threatening behavior.
“I’m just glad that it’s over, and they’re free now,” said the best friend of Barbara and Ray Sheehan’s daughter Jennifer, who told PIX11 News about the death of the ex-cop at the hands of his wife in a shooting that Barbara Sheehan claims was self defense three years ago.
Other people who know the family were reluctant to be quoted, but some family friends said on background that after the Sheehans’ second child, Raymond Jr., was born in 1990, the husband changed for the worst, and that’s when physical, emotional and psychological abuse of his wife and children began.
Sgt. Sheehan’s abuse was mostly behind closed doors — berating his family members in the car, or beating or spitting on his wife in the home. But as a parishioner at their church told PIX11 earlier this week, the signs of abuse were public.
“She’d have broken arms, broken noses, bruises. How many times can you break something?” the woman, who would not give her name, asked.
Also, there was another side to the veteran cop who was 49 when he was killed. Barbara Sheehan’s testimony shows that he wore lingerie and other women’s clothing as part of an alternative lifestyle.
That lifestyle included his wearing adult diapers, not because of incontinence, but as a sexual fetish, where he’d act like a baby and force his wife to treat him like one, disciplining him.
Barbara Sheehan’s attorney, Michael Dowd says he has evidence that Ray also had regular encounters with transvestite prostitutes upstate, including GPS readings from Raymond’s car that it had been to a known transvestite brothel in Albany.
