NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (PIX11) - You can call its sneaky or smart.

The Northampton Police Department in Massachusetts is under fire after coaxing students at Northhampton High School to write a statement about a recent threat made at the school.

Little did the students know, those hand-written statements may be used as evidence where authorities plan on matching the handwriting from a threatening note recently found on school grounds to one of the students.

Northampton High School was evacuated back on December 19, after a disturbing note was found in one of the school’s bathrooms.

Students and staff were already on edge considering five days earlier, a deranged gunman opened fire at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn. killing 26 people.

Officials insist the handwriting method they decided to use in their investigation is valid and legal.
