Firefighter injured battling Newark blaze

NEWARK N.J. — A firefighter is in critical condition after a massive fire broke out in Newark Saturday night, fire officials said.

Firefighter Paul Leber, 38, a 10-year veteran was taken to the hospital after becoming disoriented inside the building on fire.

Firefighters responded to the fire that broke out at Velez Tire Shop on Park Avenue around 9 p.m. While they were inside the building, conditions worsened, forcing crews out of the area, fire officials said.

As firefighters were exiting, Leber became disoriented. Members went back into the building to rescue him, according to authorities.

The fire was deemed under control shortly after 11 p.m. Newark’s fire division is determining the cause of the blaze.
