PORT CHESTER, N.Y. — A teenager has died after he fell through the roof of an abandoned hospital and down an elevator shaft in Westchester County, police said.

Police Chief Richard Conway said shoppers at a nearby mall reported at about 8 p.m. that a group of teenagers were on the roof of 406 Boston Post Road, the site of the former United Hospital.

Police said they tried to talk the teenagers down using a public address system, but one of them fell through a hole and down several stories.

He was found at the bottom of the shaft, police said. He was taken to a hospital where he died. The victim’s name has not been released.

The abandoned hospital is being redeveloped for commercial use.
