FAR ROCKAWAY, Queens – Police are investigating how a special needs student at a middle school in Far Rockaway sustained serious head injuries.

It’s not clear if the 8-year-old boy was the victim of a vicious assault or if he was injured in a terrible accident.

EMS responded to the scene at P.S. 253 on Wednesday, and rushed the boy to Long Island Jewish Medical Center.

Police did not learn of the incident until Friday evening, when the boy’s parents called 911. Investigators then went to the hospital where the child is suffering from a brain hemorrhage and fractured skull.

The Department of Education released the following statement:“This is an extremely troubling incident, and the principal and school staff have been providing the family with ongoing support during this difficult time. We are looking into what transpired and will ensure that it is swiftly addressed.”
