UPPER EAST SIDE, Manhattan — Police are asking for the public's assistance Sunday in locating a man who allegedly punched a woman and stole her bag. A camera in the lobby of the woman's building captured the violent confrontation.
The man allegedly followed the woman inside her Upper East Side building Friday night and demanded that she give him her bag. He then punched her in the face and body, police said.
"I cringed" said Jane an upper East side resident after seeing the video. "It's upsetting whether it's a man or a woman."
She gave the man her bag and he ran from the building in an unknown direction.
The woman was cut under her left eye and sustained bruising on her face, police said. She was taken to a local hospital for treatment of her injuries.
The man is described as between 40 and 45 years old and around 5-feet 4-inches tall. He was last seen wearing a black hat, a black coat and black pants.
Upper East Side residents hope an arrest is made soon before he strikes again.
"I hope someone has seen him around and knows who he is." said Taryn Palatinov.
