MIDTOWN, Manhattan — The NYPD announced Tuesday what streets will be closed Wednesday for the annual lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree.
Starting at 3 p.m., 48th, 49th, 50th and 51st streets will be closed between Fifth and Sixth avenues. The Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony begins at 7 p.m.
Police say heavy traffic is expected for the area and drivers should avoid the area between 3 p.m. and 11 p.m. Spectators are urged to use public transportation to attend the event. Umbrellas, backpacks and large bags are prohibited.
The streets will remain closed until the event is over.
The 2016 tree was selected from Oneonta, New York. It is decorated with more than 50,000 multi-colored LED lights and has a Swarovski star at the top.
