JAMAICA, Queens — Two people were shot Sunday evening in a home invasion in Queens, police say.

The shooting happened just before 7 p.m. in a home at 163-72 Mathias Ave., in Jamaica, Queens.

Police say two men allegedly forced their way into the home, shooting a man and a woman. Sources say the female victim struck one of the home invaders with the claw end of a hammer in his head after she was shot. The pair then fled on foot in separate directions.

The man, 58, was shot multiple times in the torso. The woman, 52, was shot once in the shoulder. Both victims were taken to Jamaica Hospital where the man is in critical condition.

Neighbor Mario Farez said it was possible the two were targeted because they had nice cars.

"They get along with everyone," Farez said.

Police describe the suspects as being between the ages of 20 and 30.
