NEWARK, N.J. — A Newark man who sexually assaulted a girl he was babysitting was convicted Friday, Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray said.
Uvaldo Melgar, 45, babysat sisters, aged 7 and 10, every Saturday while their mother was at work, according to court documents. Melgar repeatedly sexually assaulted the youngest girl for nearly a year.
“The little girls, who were supported by their mother, bravely testified in a courtroom full of strangers about the horrific acts committed against them by this defendant,’’ said Assistant Prosecutor Camille Claudio.
He was convicted of first degree aggravated sexual assault, second degree sexual assault and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, according to court documents. Melgar is scheduled to be sentenced on Feb. 6. He faces up to 50 years in New Jersey State Prison.
“This is a victory for the victims in this case and for all victims who have been sexually assaulted. The victims of sexual assault in Essex County should know they have a voice,’’ said Assistant Prosecutor Peter Polidoro.
