NEWARK, N.J. – A retired NYPD officer scared away two men who tried to rob her at gunpoint after she discharged her weapon Thursday night, authorities said.

The incident began at Commerce Street and McCarter Highway at approximately 9:33 p.m. when the 43-year-old former detective was getting into her vehicle and two men, ages 23 and 27, approached her, demanding her money using a handgun, according to Newark police.

During the attempted robbery she fired her gun and shot them, causing them to flee, police said. The two men were caught nearby by Newark police officers as they were running away.

They were taken to local hospitals where they suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Both were charged with robbery, police said.
