Why you should be concerned with everything but the Clinton-Trump showdown on Election Day

NEW YORK — Despite what you may think, there’s more going on outside of the Hillary Clinton–Donald Trump showdown on Election Day.

Depending on where you live, there are other races and ballot questions that are just as important.

Luckily there are a few apps that can help you navigate through all the hot air.

In New York, the app “Who’s On The Ballot” can help you find your polling place, check your registration status and pull up specific information about the list of candidates running in your district as well as where they stand on the issues.

“We have really important races happening in New York for the State Senate and the State Representatives as well as Congress,” Ester Fuchs, professor of public affairs and political science at Columbia University, told PIX11 News.

The non-partisan site, which was launched by Fuchs and her graduate students, easily digs up policy stances for the candidates, breaking down the race in English, Spanish and Chinese.

“These groups are less likely to turn out if they are having a difficult time with English,” she said. “So they are citizens they have the right to vote we feel like its important for them to engage.”

For those of you who live outside of New York, Countable – available on iPhone and Android – goes deeper and allows users to pull up their district’s full ballot, providing insight on candidates, issues and ballot questions.

For example, there will be two important questions on the ballot out in New Jersey. One about the gas tax and the other about casinos. Countable helps you break it all down.

The app even provides background the questions with reasons to vote yes and no.

According to a recent study, most voters heading to the polls on November 8 are oblivious to the issues being voted on in their own backyard, due in part by polarizing races like the one that has consumed the 24-hour news cycle for the past 18 months.

The information is out there, it’s up to voters to find it.
