NEW YORK — The red Starbucks cup craze may have started even earlier this year after a Reddit user reportedly leaked what could be the coffee chain’s new red cup design for the holiday season.
User DasUberSquid, reportedly a Starbucks employee, snapped a photo of a stack of the new cups which feature a design that looks like a bird sitting in holly leaves and branches.
“We got our red cups in, and being a curious person, I opened one up. I dig it!,” DasUberSquid wrote. “I’m the designated rebel in our kiosk.”
The design, if it’s official, is a contrast to last year’s solid shade of red which sparked controversy among religious groups who said the coffee chain was abandoning the religious aspects of the holiday season.
Starbucks has not yet confirmed if this holly berry design is the official holiday cup.
Even before the holiday rush starts, Starbucks is unveiling Tuesday a green and white cup featuring a hand drawn “mosaic of more than a hundred people drawn in one continuous stroke,” according to the Starbucks website.
“During a divisive time in our country, Starbucks wanted to create a symbol of unity as a reminder of our shared values, and the need to be good to each other,” said Starbucks chairman and CEO Howard Schultz.
Grab a drink in a new green and white cup in any U.S. Starbucks store starting Tuesday while supplies last.
