BAYSIDE, Queens – A 23-year-old Queens woman is in need of charitable contributions toward her medical costs after she broke her spine and was sexually assaulted in Thailand two months ago.
Hannah Gervios, of Bayside, is recovering at a hospital in New York City after falling off a 150-foot cliff while trying to escape her tourist guide who sexually attacked her on September 1, according to her GoFundMe page. She can barely walk and has partial paralysis, and now her family is asking for donations to help pay off expenses aimed at her rehabilitation.
“We are raising funds to pay for medical bills, medical equipment, psychotherapy, and physical therapy which will not be fully covered by our insurance company,” her mother Gwen Gervios said. “It is so meaningful to us that our family and friends want to help us in our time of need.”
Gervios, while teaching English in Vietnam, decided to take a short trip to a popular tourist spot in Thailand in September, her GoFundMe page read. Exhausted and lost on her first night, she sought the help of a guide to take her to her hotel. The man instead took Gervios to a forest where he attacked her. After she fought him off, the Queens native fell and severely injured her back, leaving her vulnerable for her assailant to grope her.
Her attacker faces five years in prison, the NY Times reported Friday, after he plead guilty, halving his potential jail time. The news outraged her family who said while her assailant will see only a few years of jail time, Gervios will endure pain for the rest of her life.
