UPPER EAST SIDE, Manhattan – Three people were hospitalized following an apartment fire on the Upper East Side, but the situation could have been much worse if it weren't for the actions of a nearby security guard.

The fire began on the fourth floor of 1562 Third Ave. at about 2:10 a.m. Thursday and spread to the fifth floor, according to the FDNY.

A security guard at a nearby construction site smelled the smoke and ran into the apartment building to wake people up.

"The smoke was so dense," Willie Robinson said. "I tried to get everybody out, but I couldn't."

The three victims were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.
