JERSEY CITY, N.J. — An 11-year-old boy was fatally struck by a bus in Jersey City on Friday morning, officials said.

George Gonzalez was with his mother near the intersection of John F. Kennedy Boulevard and Neptune Avenue just after 8 a.m. when he was hit. He was rushed to Jersey City Medical Center in “very, very critical condition,” but did not survive, a spokesman for the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office said.

It is not yet clear what caused the crash, officials said. His mother was not injured.

The bus was a commuter bus, but it was not immediately clear what company runs the bus.

Jersey City Medical Center sent grief counselors to Gonzalez’ school, Beloved Community Charter School, according to a hospital spokesman.
